Care Guide: How to Extend the Life of Your Bouquet
Podíl
You’ve received a beautiful bouquet and want it to last as long as possible. Here are a few recommendations to help keep your flowers fresh and extend their lifespan.
1. A fresh diagonal cut is essential for the stems. Use a sharp knife or pruners.
A dry cut prevents water from reaching the buds, so be sure to trim the stems every time you change the water.
2. When changing the water, it’s recommended to thoroughly rinse the vase with hot soapy water.
This helps prevent the buildup of bacteria.
3. Leaves should not be submerged in water.
This keeps the water clean and allows nutrients to reach the buds. Remove any leaves that fall below the waterline.
4. Flowers prefer cold water.
If your bouquet came with a flower food sachet, dissolve it completely in the water. It helps keep the water fresh longer and slows bacterial growth.
5. Keep flowers away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and air conditioning.
Also avoid placing them near fruits, especially citrus, as they release substances that accelerate wilting.
6. It’s best to remove the wrapping once you get home.
Without it, the stems can breathe freely and are not constricted by ribbons.
7. If you receive a bouquet in a café, ask the staff to trim the stems and place it in water.
This is especially important for roses, peonies, and hydrangeas, as it helps prevent dehydration.
8. In winter, at sub-zero temperatures, do not remove the protective wrapping immediately.
Allow the bouquet some time to adapt — this makes the temperature change less stressful.
9. A bouquet should not stay without water for more than one hour.
If you have a long walk or journey ahead, ask your florist to arrange it in an aqua box to keep the flowers hydrated during transport.
Following these recommendations will help extend the life of your bouquet and preserve its beauty for as long as possible.
